Srimad Bhagavatam

First Printings of the Srimad Bhagavatam, Cantos 1-10

Why the first printings?

The first printings of the Srimad Bhagavatam (beginning after the Delhi edition which Srila Prabhupada brought with him from India) are the printings Srila Prabhupada wanted printed again after expressing serious concern and frustration over the many unauthorized changes that had been made to newer printings. Srila Prabhupada referred to these printings as “originals” in 1977 and we like to refer to them as such. The first printing year is progressively different for each canto and sometimes even for different parts of the same canto. This is because the cantos and their parts were printed as Srila Prabhupada completed them, which leaves us with a range from 1972 to 1980 for the first printings of each canto and their sub-parts. The Tenth Canto Part Three of the Bhagavatam, printed in 1980, was the only part of a canto printed after the physical disappearance of Srila Prabhupada in 1977. Srila Prabhupada dictated the translation and purports up until the final moments of his physically manifest presence with us, with Verse 64 of Chapter 13 being the last verse in Part Three. Those 13 chapters were finally published in a small, final printing (Part Three) of the Tenth Canto in 1980.

Below is a catalogue of the first printings of the 10 Cantos of the Srimad Bhagavatam given to us by Srila Prabhupada. This is a work-in-progress, with the end goal being to make each canto available to read in actual scans of the books as well as in digital e-book format.
